EU Landfill Directive goes live!
October 2007 saw the latest stage of the EU Landfill Directive come into force. Despite this, a survey undertaken by the PHS Group found that almost half of those questioned were not aware of the Directive let alone the impact it has on their businesses. Do you know how the latest “pre-treatment” requirements affect your business?
Although the Landfill Directive has been with us since 2002, this latest addition is designed to divert millions of tonnes of waste away from landfill sites and towards recycling and re-use. The Directive explicitly places obligations on all waste producers to ensure that only “pre-treated” waste ends up in landfill. This effectively means that as much waste as possible will need to be segregated and recycled, rather than going to landfill.
